GUWAHATI, June 14 – The first wave of floods hit the Northern Assam district of Lakhimpur today with breaches occurring in the embankments and overtopping of coffer dams of Ranganadi, Singara and Kakoi rivers following heavy downpour in their catchments in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. However, highly-placed sources in the State Water Resources Department here expressed doubts that some local people might have been involved in breaching the Ranganadi left embankment at Bogolijan in the vicinity of North Lakhimpur town. read more »

Arunachal Pradesh Tourism in order to develop eco, adventure and culture tourism is focusing a great deal on destination development. The state has added new tourism circuits namely Yingkiong to Tuting, Itanagar-Doimukh-Sagalee-Pakke Kesang-Seppa, Ziro-Nyapin-Palin-Koloriang and Daporijo-Taliha-Nacho to its existing portfolio. These destinations are being developed using enhanced communication system, accommodation facilities, as well as improved tourism products. In order to enhance inbound tourism, the state government recently extended the stay permit for foreigners from ten days to 30 days. Apart from this, the Protective Area Permit has also been relaxed, allowing minimum of two people from the earlier requirement of four to enter the protected areas. The government has also revised the rule where foreigners travelling to the state had to be married.

Foreign secretary Shivshankar Menon said the recent Chinese claim over ‘finger area’ in Sikkim border will be discussed at the talks between External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi in Beijing on Friday. “I think we will discuss peace and tranquility along the entire line, including where the boundary is settled. In the Sikkim sector, the boundary is actually settled between the two of us (India and China),” Menon told a television news channel when asked whether the ‘finger area’ issue will figure in talks.
